Why Men Should Care About Skincare
Skincare isn't complicated, and it's not just for women. Your skin is your largest organ — it protects you from the environment, regulates temperature, and is the first thing people notice about you. A basic routine takes minutes and makes a real, visible difference over time.
The good news: you don't need a shelf full of products. A simple three-step routine done consistently will outperform an elaborate one done sporadically.
Understanding Your Skin Type
Before choosing products, it helps to know what skin type you have. The main types are:
- Normal: Balanced, not too oily or dry, few blemishes
- Oily: Shiny appearance, prone to breakouts and enlarged pores
- Dry: Tight, flaky, or rough texture, especially after washing
- Combination: Oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), dry elsewhere
- Sensitive: Easily irritated, redness-prone, reacts to many products
When in doubt, start with products labelled for "all skin types" or "sensitive skin" — they're generally mild enough to work across the board.
The Core 3-Step Routine
Step 1: Cleanse (Morning & Night)
A facial cleanser removes oil, dirt, sweat, and environmental debris that accumulates on your skin throughout the day. Do not use body soap or shower gel on your face — these are too harsh and strip the skin's natural moisture barrier.
Look for a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser suited to your skin type. Apply with lukewarm water — hot water damages the skin over time. Pat dry with a clean towel; never rub.
Step 2: Moisturise (Morning & Night)
Moisturiser hydrates the skin and helps maintain its protective barrier. Even if your skin feels oily, it still needs moisture — in fact, oily skin often overproduces oil because it's dehydrated.
For daytime, choose a lightweight moisturiser. For night, you can use something slightly richer. Apply to slightly damp skin after cleansing for better absorption.
Step 3: SPF (Morning Only)
Sun protection is the single most effective anti-ageing step you can take. UV exposure causes premature wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and significantly increases skin cancer risk. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days.
Many moisturisers now include SPF, which makes this step even easier to maintain.
Optional Add-Ons (Once You've Mastered the Basics)
- Exfoliator (2–3x per week): Removes dead skin cells, improves texture and brightness
- Eye cream: Addresses dark circles and fine lines around the eyes
- Serum (e.g. Vitamin C or Retinol): Targeted treatments for specific concerns like dullness or ageing
Key Habits to Reinforce Your Routine
- Drink enough water — hydration shows on your skin
- Get consistent sleep — your skin repairs itself at night
- Change your pillowcase regularly — it accumulates bacteria and oil
- Never go to bed without washing your face, especially if you've been outside
Start with the three-step core routine and commit to it for four to six weeks before judging the results. Skincare is a long game, and consistency matters far more than complexity.
